BMW DC 04: A Revolution in Electric Motorcycles

BMW ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES: LOSSES AND PATENTS

BMW has introduced several electric motorcycles since 2015.  Functional testing studies, concepts and vehicles.  Bayerische Motoren Werke even patented the brand-typical design of the boxer engine for the cooling system of an electric motor.  MOTORRAD shows the latest developments.

BMW Motorrad has recently registered and protected 11 new names for future models. After launching the CE models, which are dedicated to electric scooters and urban mobility concepts such as the BMW CE 02, the company is now focusing its efforts on larger electric motorcycles designated by the “DC” acronym. The new names include DC 01, DC 02, DC 03, DC 04, DC 05, DC 06, DC 07, DC 08 and DC 09, which are intended for motorcycles, parts and accessories. In June 2019, BMW unveiled the Vision DC Roadster concept, which introduced the electric motorcycle line, with “DC” standing for “direct current.” There are currently no aftermarket accessories available for these new BMW electric motorcycles.

Modular monocoque frame with integrated battery

At the end of December 2023, a new international patent application was published by BMW for a modular monocoque frame for electric motorcycles. This frame includes a central battery housing made of carbon-fiber-reinforced composite plastics, such as Kevlar. Hybrid constructions using lightweight metals such as aluminum or titanium are also possible, especially in critical areas such as the steering head and swingarm mount. The modular design offers the flexibility to tailor the wheel suspension to the specific model, reducing costs and simplifying production thanks to fewer components.

Could the DC 04 be BMW’s first electric motorcycle?

In March 2023, patent drawings emerged that may refer to the DC 04, BMW's first electric motorcycle. This new model appears to be based on the BMW G 310 R, the combustion engine version of which delivers 34 hp (25 kW). The BMW DC 04 is likely to use components from the CE 04 electric scooter, which has been available since 2022, but with a reorganisation of the battery pack and motor to suit motorcycle use. The electric motor would transfer power to the rear wheel via a bevel gear system and toothed belt, with a 90-degree deflection.

BMW Vision DC Roadster and the electric boxer engine

The Vision DC Roadster concept, presented in 2019, attracted attention for its design inspired by the classic two-cylinder boxer engine, with a cooling system located in the indicated "cylinders". A patent application from June 2022 suggests that BMW is exploring this direction, envisaging cooling cylinders mounted directly on the drive, with specific functions such as heat exchange or passive cooling of electronic components. However, these patents are still in their infancy, and do not allow for definitive conclusions.

100 kW BMW E-Power Roadster Concept

In December 2019, BMW presented the E-Power Roadster Concept, an electric motorcycle that is less visionary in design than the Vision DC Roadster, but with an output of 100 kW (136 hp) and a total weight of around 300 kg. Despite this, BMW has not yet completed the development of a high-performance electric motorcycle ready for series production. However, the DC range numbered 01 to 09 suggests that several models are in the pipeline, which could range between the Vision DC Roadster and the E-Power Roadster Concept.

E-Roadster, E-Tourer, E-Adventure?

The extensive registration of names for new models seems to indicate a long-term planning strategy on the part of BMW, thus protecting names and technologies from potential claims by other manufacturers. In the future, we are likely to see models such as e-roadsters, e-tourers and e-adventure bikes. In the meantime, the image gallery offers a look at the previous developments of BMW electric motorcycles.

BMW CE 04 and CE 02 for urban mobility

The currently available BMW CE 04 was launched in spring 2022 as the successor to the BMW C Evolution from 2014. From 2024, it will be joined by the BMW CE 02, a “125 electric” model with an output of 11 kW (15 hp), accessible with a class A1 driving licence from the age of 16 or with the B196 extension of the car driving licence. Both models are intended for urban mobility, ideal for short trips in metropolitan areas.

BMW Electric Models Production at TVS in India

BMW is collaborating with its Indian partner TVS to develop future electric models. TVS already produces the G 310 models for BMW, and from 2023 it has started production of the BMW CE 02, the first electric model in the range.

The BMW DC 04 promises to be a significant breakthrough in the world of electric motorcycles. The famous German brand, known for its boxer engines, is taking a step towards a greener and more sustainable future with this revolutionary motorcycle. But what makes the BMW DC 04 so special compared to the traditional electric boxer?

Let's start with the design. The BMW DC 04 retains the elegance and innovation typical of the brand, but with a futuristic touch. Its aerodynamic frame and modern lines not only catch the eye but also offer improved aerodynamic efficiency. This improvement can translate into greater battery range, a crucial factor for those who use an electric motorcycle for daily travel.

Another distinguishing feature of the BMW DC 04 is its power. Equipped with a state-of-the-art electric motor, the DC 04 offers performance that can compete with many internal combustion engine motorcycles. The immediate throttle response and smooth power delivery allow for a pleasant and effortless ride, making it an excellent choice for motorcycle enthusiasts.

But it's not just about performance. The BMW DC 04 has also been designed with rider comfort in mind. With ergonomic seats and advanced suspension, every journey becomes a comfortable experience, even over long distances. In addition, the bike is equipped with intelligent technologies that assist the rider, such as traction control and several customizable riding modes.

Safety has not been overlooked. The BMW DC 04 includes a number of advanced safety features, such as the regenerative braking system that not only helps save energy but also offers greater safety when braking. In addition, the high-visibility LED lights ensure that the rider is always clearly visible to other road users.

One aspect that many will appreciate is the eco-friendliness of the BMW DC 04. With zero direct emissions, this motorcycle represents a more environmentally friendly option than its internal combustion counterparts. BMW has also made great strides in ensuring that the production and disposal of batteries are as sustainable as possible.

In conclusion, the BMW DC 04 is not just an electric motorcycle; it is a precursor to what the future of two-wheeled mobility could be. With an innovative design, exceptional performance and a strong focus on sustainability, the DC 04 could really mark a turning point in the electric motorcycle market. If you are a motorcycle enthusiast or simply someone looking for a more eco-friendly way to travel, the BMW DC 04 is definitely worth your attention.
